The Deaconess Arthritis Center and Osteoporosis Health and Resource Center
Rheumatoid arthritis, traumatic arthritis and osteoarthritis are the most common of the 100 different types of arthritis that affect 46 million Americans a year. At the Deaconess Arthritis Center, we understand the physical and emotional effects arthritis has on every aspect of a person's life. Our three expert board-certified rheumatologists and experienced staff at the Deaconess Arthritis Center are dedicated to providing our patients relief from arthritis pain.
What to expect
Just as there is no known specific cause of arthritis, there is no known cure. However, arthritis treatment is available.
On the patient's first visit, one of our board-certified rheumatologists, who are arthritis specialists, will conduct a thorough diagnostic arthritis evaluation, which includes a medical history and physical exam. Any necessary x-ray and laboratory work is done right then, right there. Our physical and occupational therapists will also be on hand to discuss the patient's customized arthritis treatment plan.
Upon completion of the initial appointment, the arthritis patient's primary care physician will receive an evaluation summary. The Arthritis Center will work with the physician in implementing follow-up care. In addition, patients receive a treatment plan to help minimize arthritis pain.
Osteoporosis Health and Resource Center
Approximately half of the women over the age of 50 have osteoporosis and are at risk of a bone fracture. The loss of bone mass, which occurs with age, leads to a honeycombing of the bones and the onset of osteoporosis.
The Osteoporosis Health and Resource Center at Deaconess Hospital offers a comprehensive, multidisciplinary approach, which includes evaluation, diagnosis and education. The Osteoporosis Health and Resource Center at Deaconess Hospital uses a simple, painless bone density test, called a DEXA scan to measure bone density. The DEXA scan provides a thorough scan to detect any bone loss. The results will aid a physician in counseling the patient about proper diet, exercise to manage osteoporosis. If needed, medication can keep the bones strong and avoid the risk of fractures. If ordered by a physician, most insurance plans cover a DEXA scan. Medicare will cover a test every two years. With proper medical care, those with osteoporosis can live active and comfortable lives.
