We hope your surgical procedure and stay at Deaconess Hospital is made as easy and comfortable as possible. This information will help you prepare for your surgery and answer many of your questions.
Information
Am I an inpatient or an outpatient?
You can be scheduled as either an inpatient or an outpatient, depending on your procedure. Inpatients spend the night after surgery in the hospital. Outpatients, after a brief recovery period, return home on the same day. (23 hour patients are a special case that stay overnight.)
Anesthesia
The type of anesthesia you receive during your surgery depends on the procedure. You, your physician and the anesthesiologist will make that decision together. You will be billed separately for your surgery and your anesthesia.
A few examples of anesthesia are:
- General anesthesia
- Regional blocks
- Local anesthesia
- Local anesthesia with sedation

Pre-registration
Registration begins when your physician schedules your procedure. At the same time, a pre-admission testing appointment should also be scheduled. Generally, the physician will schedule this appointment, but patients must call 513.559.2199 to confirm an appointment has been made. During pre-admission testing, blood work and a general physical are done.
If your surgeon asks you to have your family physician provide a history and physical for your surgery, just click on the following form and a History & Physical form will appear on your screen. Print the form and take it with you when you visit your physician.
Registration & Consent
A signed consent form is necessary before the procedure can be performed. Patients should bring their insurance information and their Social Security number when the report on Central Registration on the day of their procedure. Central Registration is located in the Main Lobby on L-Level. After registering, patients will proceed to pre-surgical check-in on 1st Floor.

Family members are welcome and may wait in the first floor surgical waiting room. When the procedure is complete, a member of the surgical team will contact them to update the family on your condition. Once you have recovered from anesthesia and are in stable condition, you will be moved to an inpatient recovery room where your family may join you, or, if you are an outpatient, you will be moved to an outpatient recovery room.
If you go home the same day, you will be given instructions upon discharge. Be sure to follow these instructions carefully. A responsible person must drive you home after surgery, and it is encouraged that you are not left alone in the first 24 hours. If you are admitted to the hospital, a nurse will check you into your room and explain what you can expect during your stay and plan your care. Your body's response to surgery will be carefully monitored. Your nurses and physician will work closely with one another to support your recovery.
On the day of discharge, a nurse will fully explain what you need to do at home. Instructions will include your medicines, diet, activity and other special needs. Please have your escort with you at this time. They can listen and ask questions.
