Wounds fail to heal for a variety of reasons. Diabetes and circulation problems can lead to chronic wounds, as can pressure ulcers. A post-operative incision might fail to heal properly. A traumatic injury, burn and many chronic medical problems can lead to delayed wound healing.
Persistent wounds are a problem for both the patient and the family physician. The Deaconess Wound Care Clinic partners with the patient's physicians, providing dedicated comprehensive wound care evaluations that will promote healing.
Center Process
Health history can give necessary information that helps determine the cause of the persistent wound and best treatment. Diabetes, peripheral artery disease, traumatic injuries along with post-operative incisions and traumatic burns may all lead to wounds that may not follow the usual path to recovery. Additional tests may be necessary. After a thorough evaluation, the physician and staff of the Deaconess Wound Care Clinic will prepare an individualized treatment plan. In fact, treatment for the persistent wound that fails to heal may begin at that first appointment.
Treatment
The successful treatment of a persistent wound may take many forms:
- Platelet derived growth factors
- Specialized dressings that have proven to be successful
- Debridement - removal of unhealthy tissue to encourage healing.
- Vacuum-assisted wound closure
- Nutritional consultation
- Evaluation of the vascular system related to the patient wound
